July 21, 2007 -- Albanian parliament on July 20 elected Bamir Topi, deputy leader of the governing Democratic Party, as Albania's new president.
Topi, a biologist by profession, replaces outgoing President Alfred Moisiu, who was elected five years ago.
Lawmakers cast 85 votes for Topi, one more than required in the 140-seat parliament to elect a president in Albania.
