Chechen Politician Visits Denmark

Copenhagen, May 20 (RFE/RL) -- Usman Fersauli, a senior Chechen politician and nephew of late separatist leader Dzhohar Dudayev, visited Copenhagen last week for talks about opening a Chechen information office in Denmark.

Fersauli met with Parliament's Speaker Erling Olsen, senior Conservative MP Per Stig Moeller and Hanne Severinsen, who represents the Danish Liberal Party at the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, among others.

Olsen was later reported to have told Fersauli that Denmark was hesitant whether to support Russia's application for membership at the Council of Europe. The main reason had been Moscow's handling of the Chechen crisis and its violations of human rights in the region.

Chechnya has no information offices in Western Europe. An opening of such an office in Denmark would be a breakthrough.
