Ukraine: Revolution Rallies Planned For Tomorrow

Kyiv, 6 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Events in Ukraine tomorrow will mark the 79th anniversary of the Bolshvik Revolution of October 1917. Our Kyiv correspondent reports leftists plan meetings and demonstrations to protest government policy. A rally of up to 10,000 people is planned in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk industrial and mining region. The region is also home to a significant population of ethnic Russians.

Parliament Debates Anti-Organized Crime Measures



Ukraine's Parliament is debating the implementation of a state program against organized crime. The debate follows this week assassination of parliamentary deputy Yevhen Shcherban. Officials, including Interior Minister Yuri Kravchenko, said crime has actually decreased compared to previous years. Deputies criticized the Government's program as "unsatisfactory."

Shcherban was shot dead Sunday in Donetsk as he got off his private plane after returning from Moscow. His wife was mortally wounded.



Our Kyiev correspondent reports Parliament this week has also debated possible tax reductions as part of a draft new tax code.
