Kazakhstan: Short News Items



Prague, 22 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Our correspondent reports criminal proceedings have been opened against several big Kazakh enterprises for mishandling of state credits. At a Cabinet meeting yesterday Kazakh Prime Minister Akejan Kajegeldin said about 2,000 million Tenge (about $3 million ) have been squandered "in vain." The Cabinet singled out for blame also the Ministries of Defense and Culture.

Illegal Strikers Go On Trial



Tomorrow workers of the nuclear power plant at Aqtau city in Western Kazakhstan go on trial for allegedly taking part in an illegal strike last year. Workers at the plant staged a two-hour strike in September demanding their unpaid wages. The demands were met at the time, but later the plant's administration took the workers to court for striking "illegally."
