Bratislava, 13 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - Slovak and Hungarian officials report progress in talks this week. But an anticipated meeting between Foreign Ministers might be postponed until April.
Slovakia's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ivan Korcok tells our correspondent that this week's talks in Budapest were "positive" and that discussions were held on setting up a series of joint committees. The joint committees would deal with implementation of the basic treaty between the two countries.
Bratislava-based Hungarian diplomat Miklos Boros tells RFE/RL that the meeting of Foreign Ministers will likely be delayed until April. He said the main problem is the participation of ethnic Hungarians from Slovakia on the committees, as well as ethnic Slovaks from Hungary.
In addition, Hungary brought up Slovakia's new language law, which ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia say could be used to discriminate against them.
