Russia: Bomb Found At Naval Officers' Apartment Bloc

Moscow, 25 April 1997 (RFE/RL) -- The Interfax news agency reports a powerful bomb was discovered in an apartment building for Russian naval officers today in the North Caucusus republic of Dagestan.

Reports say a young boy found the bomb in the town of Kaspiisk. Navy servicemen and border guards removed the device and detonated it outside of the town. There were no injuries.

The device was found in a building near another naval residence that had been destroyed by a bomb last autumn, killing 56 officers and their families.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for planting the device found today. A Chechen guerrilla leader, Salman Raduyev, recently threatened to carry out attacks in Russia to mark the first anniversary of the death of separatist leader Dzhokhar Dudayev, who was killed by Russian forces in April 1996.
