Czech Republic: Prime Minister Pledges To Carry On

Prague, 30 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - Czech Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus announced today in a hastily called news conference that he does not intend to resign but rather will push ahead with belt tightening measures announced on Wednesday.

Klaus also announced that his nominee for Interior Minister, Petr Necas, has withdrawn and that Interior Minister Jan Ruml at President Vaclav Havel's request has agreed to remain in office. Necas says he is withdrawing for unspecified family reasons.

Opposition Social Democratic party leader and Speaker of the lower house of parliament, Milos Zeman, announced today his party will call a vote of no confidence in the government at the next session of parliament. He says the government's cost cutting policies differ greatly from its program declaration. Zeman accuses the ruling coalition of destabilizing the Czech economy.
