Russia: Russian First Deputy Premier Declares Income

Moscow, 10 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Chubais has declared an income of about $ 300,000 (about 2 billion rubles) for 1996.

Chubais' income declaration, cited by Russian news agencies today, said over $ 290,000 were earned through fees for lectures as well as consultancies and securities transactions when he was head of the "Private Property Defense Centre" Fund. Chubais' salary as Kremlin chief of staff from July 1996 until the end of the year amounted to a little less than $ 7,000.

Chubais's family also has a two-room apartment in Moscow, a plot of land outside the city, and a Suzuki car.

Russian President Boris Yeltsin earlier this year launched a drive against corruption and ordered all government officials to declare their income. Yeltsin last month declared his own wealth.
