Russia: Duma To Vote On Spending Cuts On Monday

Moscow, 20 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - The Russian Duma decided today to postpone until Monday a vote on amendments to the 1997 budget.

The government says the amendments are crucial to sort out the country's finances.

Alexander Zhukov, deputy head of the State Duma's budget committee, told parliament that the vote on spending cuts is put on Monday's agenda at 0830 GMT.

Ministers originally wanted to slash spending by a fifth because of a shortfall in tax revenues. But parliament is insisting on much smaller cuts.
