Yugoslavia: Official Says Mass Graves May Hold 800 Kosovo Victims

Belgrade, 6 July 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Serbian Interior Minister Dusan Mihajlovic estimated today that some 800 victims of the Kosovo war were buried in mass graves across Serbia. The government recently revealed the existence in Serbia of three mass graves with 110 bodies, believed to be Kosovo Albanians.

Mihajlovic said the new figure of 800 bodies included those exhumed from the three mass graves and was based on information gathered by police after that discovery.

Mihajlovic vowed during a news conference in Belgrade that police will find out who ordered what he called a "monstrous operation."

Police in May accused former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and top aides of covering up evidence of possible war crimes committed against Kosovo Albanians.

The Serbian government last week handed over Milosevic to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague to face war crimes charges.
