Dubai, 2 May 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The U.S. military said today it has detained three more Iraqi officials on a list of 55 most-wanted figures from Saddam Hussein's former regime. U.S. Central Command said in a statement that U.S. forces have detained Abd al-Tawab al-Mullah Huwaysh, former director of Saddam's Office of Military Industrialization, who is 16th on the list. The second figure detained is Taha Muhyi al-Din Maruf, vice president and Revolutionary Command Council member, 42nd on the list. The third detained official is Mizban Khadr Hadi, who was a top Ba'ath Party leader and military commander. He was 41st on the U.S. list.
The statement did not give details of where the men were detained, whether they surrendered or were captured.
Also today, Iraqi police arrested two suspects in the killing last month in the city of Al-Najaf of Shi'ite cleric Abd al-Majid al-Khoi.
Earlier today, U.S. President George W. Bush said major combat operations in Iraq are over and the U.S. and its allies have prevailed.
The statement did not give details of where the men were detained, whether they surrendered or were captured.
