Russia: Armed Men Kill Five Police In Daghestan

Makhachkala, Russia; 30 September 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Police in Russia's southern Daghestan Republic say armed men attacked a police vehicle there today killing at least five police officers. Interfax news agency reported that three of the officers were from an investigative department, one was a detective, and one was a beat officer.

Daghestan is an ethnically mixed, mostly Muslim, region on the Caspian Sea. The attack was at an intersection in the town of Khasavyurt, near Daghestan's border with Chechnya.
