Azerbaijani Soldier Killed Near Karabakh

An Azerbaijani soldier has reportedly been killed in clashes with Armenian forces near the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

According to a report today by Azerbaijan's ANS television, the soldier, Vusal Salakhly, was fatally shot late in the village of Tagibeili, located in Azerbaijan's southwestern district of Agdam on March 27.

Armenia and Azerbaijan fought for control of Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is in Azerbaijan but dominated by ethnic Armenians, in a 1991-1994 war that killed tens of thousands of people. Armenian-backed forces remain in control of the territory and the surrounding districts. The conflict remains unresolved.

Tensions in the region have heightened recently due to efforts by Armenia and Turkey, also a close ally of Azerbaijan, to establish diplomatic relations and open their shared border.
