GM Uzbekistan Launches New Model

General Motors Uzbekistan has rolled out a new model, the Chevrolet Cobalt, a family-size sedan aimed at the local Uzbek market, Russia, and other countries.

The launch took place at an engine plant near Tashkent on September 5.

GM Uzbekistan is 25 percent-owned by the U.S. firm GM and 75 percent by Uzbek state company UzAvtosanoat.

According to market data, 94 percent of new cars sold in Uzbekistan last year were made by GM.

The joint venture sold nearly 122,000 vehicles in Uzbekistan last year and produced more than 225,000 cars.

The vehicles are produced by South Korean-trained workers at the GM plant located in the Uzbek town of Asaka in the Ferghana Valley.
