PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- A suicide bomber has blown himself up in a crowd of hundreds of mourners attending a funeral in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 27 people.
Pakistani authorities said that among those killed was Imran Khan Mohmand, a newly elected provincial legislator who may have been the target of the attack.
The blast in Shergarh village of the Mardan district was the worst attack in the region since the May 11 nationwide elections installed a new government in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The legislator's death was confirmed by a close associate.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Imran Khan Mohmand was elected on May 11 to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly as an independent candidate.
On June 3, another newly elected member of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly, Fareed Khan, was shot dead near his home in the village of Singair in the province's Hangu district.
Both men had joined the Pakistan Tehrik-e Insaf (PTI) party of cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan after winning election to the assembly.
