Egypt's electoral commission said on March 30 that it will hold a presidential election on May 26-27.
The poll comes 10 months after the ouster of democratically elected President Muhammad Morsi, who is in detention for multiple charges, including conspiring with foreign groups against Egypt.
Retired General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who led the military when it toppled Morsi, is favored to win the vote.
The other main candidate is Hamdin Sabbahi, a leftist politician who finished third in the 2012 election won by Morsi.
At least 1,400 people -- most of them supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood party -- have died in street violence and militant attacks since Morsi's ouster.
