Indian External Affairs Minister Expected in Afghanistan

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is due to visit Afghanistan on September 10 to discuss closer ties between the two countries.

Swaraj will meet with outgoing President Hamid Karzai to discuss defense and security cooperation between the two countries.

Swaraj said ahead of her visit that India would work with whichever of the two Afghan presidential candidates is declared the winner "be it Abdullah Abdullah or Ashraf Ghani."

India has invested some $2 billion in aid and reconstruction in Afghanistan and has helped train scores of Afghan military officers.

Swaraj said before leaving on her trip, "We have an age-old relationship with Afghanistan."
