Suicide Bomber Kills At Least 30 At Shi'ite Funeral In Iraq

A suicide bomber has detonated his explosive vest at a Shi'ite Muslim funeral in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, killing at least 30 people and wounding at least 58 others.

Officials said some commanders of Shi’ite militias were among those killed on February 29 in Muqdadiyah, 80 kilometers northeast of Baghdad.

The Islamic State (IS) militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.

In January, an IS bombing targeting Shi’a in Muqdadiyah triggered a wave of revenge attacks on Sunni homes and a mosque.

IS also claimed responsibility for a double bombing in Baghdad's Shi'ite district of Sadr City on February 28, which left at least 73 people dead and more than 110 others wounded.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi called on security forces to "exert further efforts to prevent the terrorists from carrying out their crimes against innocent civilians."
