Paralympics Body To Rule On Russian Participation

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) will announce a decision on the participation of Russian athletes in next month’s Paralympic Games on August 7.

The IPC issued a statement saying that media reports that it would bar the Russian team from participating over allegations of widespread, state-backed doping were “pure speculation.”

The IPC will be responding to the so-called McLaren report on allegations of Russian doping, in which 35 Russian Paralympians were mentioned by name.

The International Olympic Committee, acting on the same report on July 24, ruled against a blanket ban of the Russian team, but instead left the final decision up to each international sports federation.

The IPC also announced on August 6 that the Paralympic Games this year will include a team comprised of international refugees that will compete under the team name International Paralympics Athletes.

The Paralympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro from September 7-18.
