Security officials say Pakistani troops have killed at least 26 Islamist insurgents in clashes in the northwestern region.
Fazalur Rehman, a spokesman for the paramilitary Frontier Corps force, said ground troops backed by artillery and helicopter gunships raided four villages to hunt Taliban militants in Bajaur, one of the seven tribal districts near Afghan border, and killed 15 militants.
Elsewhere, security sources said a group of Taliban rebels attacked a security check post in Orakzai tribal district. The troops killed at least 11 militants, and two soldiers also died in the fighting.
Meanwhile, suspected U.S. missiles killed four alleged militants in the North Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border.
U.S. Central Command chief General David Petraeus was in Pakistan today meeting with Pakistani army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
According to an army statement, the two "discussed matters of professional interest." No further details were immediately available.
