British Ambassador To Yemen Escaped Bomb Attack

Police and soldiers secure the site of the apparent suicide bombing in Sana'a on April 26.

The British ambassador to Yemen has escaped a bomb attack unhurt.

Officials and witnesses said the blast appeared to have been carried by a suicide bomber who detonated his explosives as the ambassador's car was passing.

The suspected suicide bomber was killed in the blast.

The ambassador, Tim Torlot, had been on his way to the embassy when the attack took place.

Yemen has for years been battling Al-Qaeda and other militant groups.

The regional Al-Qaeda group (Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula) is based in Yemen and in the past has carried out attacks targeting foreigners.

In December, it claimed an attempt to blow up a U.S.-bound plane.
