Canadian FM Says G8 Calls For More Pressure On Iran

Iran's Bushehr nuclear plant. Western governments fear Iran is using its nuclear programs to make weapons.

Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon says G8 ministers have called for greater pressure on Iran to halt its suspect uranium enrichment program.

Cannon's remarks came as foreign ministers of the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations wrapped up a two-day meeting in the Quebec town of Gatineau.

"While G8 ministers agreed to remain open to dialogue with Iran, they also called on the international community to take appropriate steps to put pressure on Iran," Cannon said.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the world could not accept a nuclear-armed Iran and that China would be involved in considering new sanctions proposals against Iran.

Clinton also said she is confident that a consensus on sanctions will be reached at the UN Security Council.

Western powers are concerned that Iran may be using its nuclear program to try and develop a nuclear weapon. Iran denies the charge.
