Danish Soldier Killed In Afghanistan, NYT Photographer Wounded

A Danish soldier has been killed in a firefight in the southern Afghan province of Helmand.

The Danish military said on October 23 the soldier's unit was engaged in a gun battle while patrolling an area east of its base in Bridzar.

Earlier, a photographer with the "New York Times" was seriously injured in southern Afghanistan.

The newspaper said that 44-year-old Joao Silva sustained leg injuries when he stepped on a mine while accompanying U.S. soldiers on a patrol in the Arghandab district of Kandahar province.

Kandahar is a hub of the Taliban-led insurgency, now in its 10th year.
