Afghan Avalanches Kill At Least 28

KABUL -- Afghan officials say at least 28 people have been killed and more than 70 injured after vehicles were trapped overnight by avalanches in a treacherous pass across the Hindu Kush Mountains.

The Defense Ministry said hundreds more were stranded.

The avalanches, after days of heavy snow, also blocked the entrances to a 2.6-kilometer-long tunnel in the Salang pass, on the main route connecting Kabul with northern Afghanistan.

Officials said rescuers worked through the night to save some 200 people.
