BISHKEK -- Former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle says he believes the international community should do more to shore up democracy in Kyrgyzstan.
Daschle, a former Democratic Senate majority leader, was visiting Bishkek as vice chairman of the Washington-based National Democratic Institute.
Daschle told RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service in Bishkek today that a more democratic Kyrgyzstan would help stabilize the region.
"I think we have to reestablish security throughout the country, making sure that there is adequate police protection and making sure that the investigation into past abuse takes place," Daschle added.
"I think a very comprehensive, full-fledged international investigation into past abuse is also something that can help us as we look to the future."
Kyrgyzstan was rocked by riots and interethnic violence in June, following the April ousting of former President Kurmanbek Bakiev.
The country is set to hold parliamentary elections in October.
