Landslide Kills 16 In Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK (Reuters) -- A landslide swept through a village in the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan on April 15, killing at least 16 people, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene in the south of the former Soviet republic to recover the bodies and help survivors, a ministry spokesman said.

Downpours of rain and melting snow often cause torrents of water, clay, and rocks to cascade onto settlements in spring in a country that is almost entirely made up of mountainous terrain.

Experts say overgrazing makes slopes more prone to landslides in the impoverished nation of 5 million.
