NATO Invites Russia To Join Talks In Lisbon In November

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen

NATO says it has invited Russia to attend talks with leaders of member countries during a summit in Lisbon in November.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told a news briefing in Brussels today that it is important that the NATO summit in Lisbon restate the alliance's offer for Russia to cooperate in missile defense.

NATO diplomats said they were waiting for a response from Moscow to the invitation.

While NATO is keen to enhance security cooperation with Russia, progress has been only gradual since they patched up relations damaged by Russia's 2008 intervention in Georgia.

NATO has rebuffed President Dmitry Medvedev's proposal for a new European security treaty.
