A German official said a suspicious package found at Chancellor Angela Merkel's office on November 2 was personally addressed to Merkel and "would have been able to harm people."
Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said police were able to disarm the package that arrived at the chancellory. Seibert gave no further details.
The news came as parcel bombs exploded at the Russian and Swiss embassies in Athens today and devices sent to three others were intercepted, the latest in a wave of attacks linked to left-wing extremists.
Today's explosions came after police on November 1 arrested two suspects carrying a parcel bomb addressed to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, following the explosion of a package at a courier company in Athens.
That explosion left a worker at the courier company with injuries to her hands. The two men arrested were suspected members of a far left group.
