Three regional officials have quit after President Dmitry Medvedev called for officials to stand down over forest fires that killed eight people and burnt down hundreds of homes in Russia at the end of August.
A deputy governor of the Volgograd region and the heads of two municipal districts stepped down on September 6 after Medvedev a day earlier accused municipal authorities of negligence, and said officials should "wake up."
Earlier this summer wildfires raged across much of Russia, ravaging farmland, destroying whole villages, and leaving more than 50 people dead.
