Pro-Peace Cleric Assassinated In Afghanistan

A popular Muslim cleric who had called for peace in Afghanistan has been assassinated.

Police in Kunar Province say cleric Rahman Gul was killed on May 16 along with his brother and a relative.

Police say the three were shot dead as they returned to their homes in Chapa Dara district.

Gul had stressed the importance of "peace and stability" across Afghanistan.

The deaths are the latest in a series of killings targeting Afghan government figures and others aligned with international forces.

Elsewhere, two members of the NATO coalition, including one American servicemember, have been killed in southern Afghanistan.
