A report says Lithuania's former foreign minister, Vygaudas Usackas, is expected to be formally appointed as early as today to be the European Union's next top official in Afghanistan.
The German news agency dpa quoted EU officials as saying the EU's foreign policy director, Catherine Ashton, would confirm Usackas' appointment at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
No official EU confirmation of the report was available.
The report says the EU's current special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ettore Francesco Sequi, is due to step down at the end of Feburary. The EU representative's task is to coordinate the EU's security and development assistance to Afghanistan.
Usackas was forced to resign as Lithuania's foreign minister in January of this year amid controversy over Lithuania having hosted a secret detention facility run by the U.S. CIA.
Usackas has also previously served as Lithuania's ambassador to the United States and Britain.
