MOSCOW (Reuters) -- Russia and the United States will meet in Moscow from May 18-20 for talks on replacing a Cold War treaty that curbs nuclear arsenals, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.
A successor treaty to the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START-1), which expires in December, is seen by both sides as a way to show that the former Cold War foes can work together despite a range of differences on other issues.
"They agreed to hold the first round of negotiations between the two delegations in a full format from May 18 until May 20 in Moscow," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.
The statement did not say how high-ranking the delegations would be.
On April 24 in Rome, the Russian and United States delegations held preliminary talks on a treaty to replace START-1 which they described as "very productive."
