Russia has threatened to retaliate for Romania's tit-for-tat expulsion of a top Russian diplomat.
Romania expelled a first secretary in the Russian Embassy in Bucharest on August 17, a day after Russia expelled a Romanian first secretary from Moscow who it said had been caught spying.
Russia's Foreign Ministry said today that it had warned Romania against taking reciprocal action against a Russian diplomat who had not been accused of spying, "but it seems that common sense did not prevail."
The ministry said Romania seemed determined to "poison the atmosphere" in Russian-Romanian relations, and Moscow "reserved the right to take retaliatory measures."
Relations have been cool between Russia and Romania, a member of NATO.
