Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has arrived in Chechnya in a surprise visit following a series of attacks on police officers and civilians in the North Caucasus region.

The Russian president is expected to meet with pro-Moscow Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov in the capital city of Grozny to discuss challenges facing the predominantly Muslim provinces in southern Russia.

Earlier this month, five people were killed in Chechnya's border region with Ingushetia.
