Slovaks Vote In Referendum On Downsizing Parliament

Slovaks are going to the polls to vote in a controversial referendum proposing to downsize parliament and cut political privileges.

The vote was called after more than 350,000 Slovak voters signed a petition supporting the referendum, which proposes to strip lawmakers of immunity from prosecution and lower to 40,000 euros ($52,000) the amount that cabinet ministers can spend on government automobiles.

Leading government and opposition politicians have criticized the referendum, which will require the participation of at least 50 percent of the country's 4.3 million voters to be valid.
