Spain has become the world champion of soccer.

A goal in extra time gave Spain a 1-0 win over the Netherlands in the FIFA World Cup final at Johannesburg, South Africa.

Andres Iniesta scored with four minutes to go in extra time to hand Spain its first-ever World Cup title to go along with its 2008 European crown.

It was the Netherlands' third loss in a World Cup final, the others coming in 1974 and 1978.

It was a rough final with a record 13 yellow cards and one red card for Dutch defender John Heitinga.

The final was the 64th game of the tournament, which started a month ago with 32 teams.

It was also the first World Cup played in Africa.

Uruguay striker Diego Forlan won the Golden Ball as the top player of the tournament.

Germany forward Thomas Mueller won the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer.
