Taliban Claim To Hold Missing U.S. Soldier, Body Of Another

Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan say they are holding one of two U.S. soldiers who went missing from their base on July 23 and that they also have the body of the second soldier.

Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters by phone that the Taliban leadership would decide later on the fate of the captive.

Mujahid did not mention earlier reports that said the insurgents had offered through intermediaries to swap the body of the American for captive members of the Taliban.

The two U.S. servicemen, thought to be with the U.S. Navy, were reported missing after failing to return in a vehicle they had taken from their compound in Kabul.
