Tatar President Backs Treaty-Based Relations With Russia

KAZAN (RFE/RL) -- Tatar President Mintimer Shaimiev says he backs Kazan's right to build relations with Moscow based on a power-sharing treaty, RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service reports.

Shaimiev added that the political status of Tatarstan is of fundamental importance for the republic.

"Today we see Tatarstan demonstrating maturity and sustainable development. The main guarantee for Tatarstan's success is its statehood," Shaimiev said.

The president spoke on the occasion of Tatarstan's Constitution Day, which is celebrated on November 6.
