Three Guantanamo Inmates Sent To Georgia

The transfers leave some 185 detainees still at the U.S. facility on Cuba.

U.S. authorities have transferred three inmates from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to Georgia, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

Their identities were not made public and consultations will continue between U.S. and Georgian officials over their situation.

State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said that the United States was "grateful to the government of Georgia for joining their efforts to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay."

President Barack Obama has pledged to close the U.S. military base in Cuba, but his administration has struggled to find countries to take in those cleared of any charges but who cannot be returned to their home countries for various reasons.

Reuters says the transfers, which reportedly took place early today, mean that 185 detainees remain at the Guantanamo facility.
