Turkmenistan Goes Green

Need for trees

Turkmenistan has established a department to monitor the trees in newly planted "green zones" in the country, RFE/RL's Turkmen Service reports.

Millions of trees have been planted in the country in recent months in an effort to make some parts of the mostly desert country green with trees.

Unfortunately the results of the large-scale tree planting are not as successful as was hoped, as roughly half of the trees become desiccated soon after they are planted due to a lack of water.

Some 3 million trees are being planted in Turkmenistan as part of the most current phase of the program.

And some local observers say that the tree-planting campaigns are rife with corruption and that the money could be better spent on more useful things for society.
