Turkey Warns Washington Over Armenian Genocide Resolution

Turkey has warned the United States that the passing of a congressional resolution recognizing the mass killings of Armenians during World War I as a "genocide" could harm relations between the two nations.

The U.S. House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee is scheduled to vote on the nonbinding resolution later today. Approval would send the resolution to the full House for consideration.

Turkish officials have warned passing the resolution would hurt relations between Turkey and the United states, and could also harm an already faltering reconciliation process between Turkey and Armenia.

Turkish media reports said President Abdullah Gul, in a phone call late on March 3, urged his American counterpart Barack Obama to use his influence to block the resolution.
