U.S. Official Says China's President To Visit U.S. In January

China's President Hu Jintao

A senior U.S. official says China's President Hu Jintao will visit the United States in January, in what would be the latest sign of a thaw in relations.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who is on a visit to China, did not give a specific date for the visit.

Holder also said that during meetings this week with Chinese officials in Beijing, he raised the case of imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo.

China denounced the awarding of the prize to Liu, calling it interference in its internal affairs.

The United States welcomed it and called for Liu's release.

Holder today said that "fundamental" disagreements over this, and other issues should not hamper cooperation in other areas.
