White House: Obama To Meet With Yanukovych At Nuclear Summit

Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovych

The White House says U.S. President Barack Obama will hold talks with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on the sidelines of the nuclear security summit Obama is hosting in Washington this week.

The meeting on April 12 will mark the first face-to-face meeting between Obama and Yanukovych, who won Ukraine's election in February.

The White House said Obama and Yanukovych are expected to discuss "a broad range of issues of mutual concern," including nuclear nonproliferation, the impacts of the global economic crisis, energy security, and defense cooperation.

The statement says Obama "looks forward to his first opportunity to consult in person" with Yanukovych, and adds that "the United States and Ukraine enjoy strong bilateral relations and are working together" through their Strategic Partnership Commission to advance common interests.
