Pakistani Sentenced In U.S. Over Taliban Smuggling Plot

A Pakistani man has been sentenced to more than four years in jail in the United States for trying to smuggle into the country someone he thought was a member of the Pakistani Taliban.

Irfan ul Haq, 37, last September pleaded guilty along with two other Pakistanis to conspiracy to provide support to a terror organization.

On January 5, a U.S. federal judge in Washington sentenced him to 50 months in jail.

The other two men were sentenced last month to 40 months and 36 months in prison over the same plot, carried out between January and March 2012.

The three men were arrested in Miami in March 2011 after they agreed to a request by undercover U.S. law enforcement agents to help get someone they were told was a member of a terrorist group into the United States.

They had faced a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
