Afghan Officials Seek Release Of College Professors, Students

Afghan officials say they are trying to secure the release of dozens of university professors and students who were kidnapped on June 10.

Unknown gunmen attacked a bus traveling from Kandahar to Kabul with an estimated 37 professors and at least eight students aboard.

The students and professors are from Kandahar State University.

The bus was reportedly attacked in Ghazni Province, about 150 kilometers from Kabul.

A professor who suffered bullet wounds in the attack on the bus and was taken to a hospital told RFE/RL that men with covered faces made everyone get off the bus and board other vehicles before being taken away.

An Afghan official told RFE/RL that the students and professors were divided into groups and taken to different parts of Ghazni Province.

No one has claimed responsibility for the incident.
