Afghan Convicted Of Stabbing Spree In Sweden Sentenced To Life In Prison

A police forensics team works at a knife attack site where several people were injured before the suspect was shot by police and taken into custody in Vetlanda, Sweden, on March 3.

A Swedish court sentenced on July 14 an Afghan refugee to life in prison for a stabbing spree in March that left seven victims hospitalized.

The man, who is in his 20s and arrived in Sweden in 2018, attacked people in several locations on March 3 in the town of Vetlanda, some 275 kilometers south of Stockholm. He was arrested after being shot and wounded by police.

Three of the injured victims were left with life-threatening injuries in the attack.

Police initially investigated possible terrorism motives but the man was eventually charged only with attempted murder.

He had suffered from mental illness at the time of the attack but was not judged unfit to stand trial.

Sweden has been targeted twice by terrorist attacks in recent years.

In December 2010, an Iraqi-born man carried out a suicide bomb attack in the capital, Stockholm, slightly injuring passers-by.

A failed Uzbek asylum seeker who sympathized with the Islamic State extremist group used a stolen lorry in April 2017 to kill five people in the Swedish capital. He was sentenced to life in prison.
