Afghan President Hamid Karzai has appointed two commissions to supervise arrangements for a meeting of Afghan tribal leaders that will advise the government on whether to sign a security deal with the United States.
On October 10, Karzai appointed Sadiq Mudabbir and Ayub Salangi to coordinate the arrangements and security for the Loya Jirga, or grand assembly.
Karzai called on October 7 for the assembly to be held within a month to decide the fate of the long-foundering deal, which will enable U.S. forces to stay in the country after the withdrawal of international troops next year.
He called for the agreement to preserve the national interests of Afghanistan and provide security guarantees from terrorist violence and "the bombardment by the United States."
The two countries have been discussing the agreement since November 2012.
