Gunfire, Explosions Strike Central Kabul

Heavy gunfire and a series of explosions have rocked the center of Afghanistan's capital overnight.

Reports said Afghan security forces were deployed overnight to the upscale neighborhood Wazir Akbar Khan, which is home to several embassies and government buildings.

Kabul police spokesman Ebadullah Karimi said a guesthouse was believed to be the target of the attack.

"They are using hand grenades and explosions can be heard. Security forces are at the scene trying to contain the attack," Karimi said.

Wazir Akbar Khan district has been a target of Taliban attacks in the past.

But no group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, which comes as the Taliban intensifies its annual spring-summer offensive.

Earlier this month, 14 people, including several foreigners, were reported killed in a attack by the group on a Kabul guesthouse.
