Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has called on international donors to continue supporting his “wounded country” that has been facing a 14-year-Taliban insurgency.
Ghani made the call on September 5 at a conference of donors in the Afghan capital attended by representatives of Western countries and nongovernmental organizations.
Donors have pledged billions of dollars over the past decade to rebuild the war-torn country.
Ghani said reconstructing Afghanistan will be a “long-term endeavor.”
“Widespread unemployment, a violent insurgency, and the advance of extremism across the region are increasing the likelihood that [our] economic reform agenda will be undone by political unrest," he warned.
The meeting was a follow-up to a December 2014 meeting in London, where Ghani first offered his vision for a self-reliant Afghanistan.
Speaking in Kabul on September 5, Ghani said he will work to improve human rights in the country, particularly women’s rights, by the next donor conference that is due to be held in Brussels next year.
