Mortar Kills Five Family Members In Eastern Afghanistan

Five members of an Afghan family have been killed by a mortar shell that hit their house in eastern Afghanistan.

Afghan provincial authorities said the victims included four women and one man.

Eleven other members of the family were wounded in the attack late on April 24.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

They were killed in in the mountainous Alingar district of Laghman Province, to the north of the city of Jalalabad and a few dozen kilometers west of the border with Pakistan.

The shelling came days after Taliban militants announced that they have begun a spring offensive, vowing to target Afghan police, army, and intelligence officials.

The German news agency dpa quoted unnamed Afghan officials as saying on April 25 that 100 militants had been killed by Afghan security forces during the previous 24 hours.
